Laptop Overheating in Summer? Here’s How to Fix It
(Without Opening It Up)
Author: Bilawal Gul
Your laptop hates Pakistani summers.
It’s not just the heat. It’s your table. Your charger. The apps you’re running. The way you’re using it.
If your laptop feels like a ‘Tandoor’ by 2pm, don’t panic and don’t unscrew anything. You can fix most overheating problems without opening up your machine.
Here’s how the pros do it.
First: Know the Danger Signs
Before we fix anything, let’s spot the issue.
Is your laptop overheating? Look for
- The fan sounds like a jet engine
- The bottom feels too hot to touch
- It randomly shuts down or slows down
- Your battery drains unusually fast
- Apps start lagging, even light ones
Overheating isn’t just annoying, it kills battery health, throttles performance, and can shorten your laptop’s lifespan by up to 50% if ignored.
1. Don’t Use It on Beds, Sofas, or Cushions
Your laptop breathes from below. Block the vents, and it suffocates.
Worst surfaces for airflow:
Surface |
Ventilation | Overheat Risk |
Bed/cushion | ❌ Blocked | 🔥🔥🔥 High |
Sofa/blanket | ❌ Blocked | 🔥🔥🔥 High |
Wooden table | ✅ Clear | ✅ Low |
Laptop stand | ✅ Elevated |
✅ Lowest |
Solution: Use a hard, flat surface. Even better invest in a laptop cooling stand (₨2,000–₨4,000).
2. Clean Your Vents! Without Opening It
Dust is the enemy. It clogs airflow and acts like a wool sweater for your CPU.
What to do:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow into the side and bottom vents (short bursts, 10–15 cm away).
- Do this once a month in summer.
If you see dust flying out, good. That was suffocating your machine.
You can find compressed air cans or blower at most computer shops or order online, they’re under ₨1,000.
3. Check Your Running Apps
If your laptop is boiling while you’re only watching YouTube, chances are something heavy is running in the background.
How to check:
Windows:
Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Task Manager → “Processes” tab
Sort by CPU and Memory usage
Look out for:
- Chrome with 20+ tabs open
- Software updaters stuck in loops
- Heavy apps like Photoshop running idle
Close what you’re not using. Especially in the heat, less is more.
4. Adjust Performance & Fan Settings
Modern laptops let you throttle performance and boost cooling without needing BIOS-level tweaks.
Lenovo (use Lenovo Vantage):
- Open Lenovo Vantage → “Device” → “Power” or “Thermal Mode”
- Switch to “Performance” or “Balanced”
Windows:
- Settings → Power & Battery → Power Mode → Choose “Balanced” or “Power Saver”
This gives your fans room to breathe and reduces power draw.
5. Elevate, Don’t Suffocate
Raising your laptop by even an inch can improve airflow by 20–30%.
DIY: Place two bottle caps or books under the back corners to create an angle. Better yet, use a laptop riser with open airflow.
Want a pro upgrade? A cooling pad with USB-powered fans starts at ₨2,500 and works wonders.
6. Update Your BIOS & Drivers
Manufacturers like Lenovo, HP, and Dell regularly release updates that improve thermal performance.
Here’s how:
- Search for your brand’s support tool:
Lenovo → Lenovo Vantage
HP → HP Support Assistant
Dell → Dell Update Utility - Run all BIOS, chipset, and thermal firmware updates
Outdated BIOS is a common overheating culprit. Fixes take 10 minutes.
7. Don’t Use It While Charging (If You Can Help It)
Heat plus charging = double stress.
What to avoid:
- Gaming or rendering while plugged in
- Running on high brightness at full charge
- Charging it under a blanket or enclosed space
Best practice: Charge fully. Then unplug. Use it on battery for light tasks when possible.
8. Turn Off Fast Startup
Windows 10/11 has a “Fast Startup” feature that keeps your laptop in a semi-hibernation state. It can mess with temperature management.
Here’s how to disable it:
- Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do
- Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable”
- Uncheck “Turn on fast startup” → Save
It takes a few seconds longer to boot, but your internals will thank you.
Final Word: You Don’t Need to Be a Technician
You just need discipline and the right setup.
Most laptop overheating problems in summer are preventable without tools, without risk, and without cracking anything open.
